Port Stephens has seven surf beaches (and many more sheltered water beaches in the Harbour, which are not so good for surfing but worth a mention) and is a mecca for local surfers and surfers travelling the East Coast of Australia. The most popular surf beaches are Fingal Bay, One Mile and Birubi (all patrolled in the warmer months), and there is also Zenith, Wreck and Box beaches at Shoal Bay. A local secret is Samurai Beach, next to One Mile Beach with access via 4WD track or about a 20 minute walk from the main road (Gan Gan Road).
Unless there is a strong Westerly wind blowing, you will find a beach to surf in Port Stephens. In a SE/NE wind head to One Mile, in a S/NE wind head to Birubi or Samurai, in a NE wind head to Zenith, in a SE wind head to Fingal and if its E/NE then head to Wreck or Box beaches. Check out current wind and weather conditions here. Always remember to monitor the conditions prior to heading into the water…. check for rips and currents, sand build up etc.
There is a surf school in Port Stephens, offering lessons, board hire (surfboard and paddleboard) and wetsuit hire.
